PREPARING FOR YOUR MARRIAGE
‘A wedding is one day – a marriage is a lifetime’
You have probably already spent many hours planning your wedding. There are so many things to think about – the dress, the cake, whom to invite, the honeymoon. All these are important, but the wedding is just one day, while marriage should last for the rest of your lives.
Alongside the wedding preparations it is also important to spend time as a couple talking through your expectations of marriage. However much you think you have in common, you are still two seperate individuals with different backgrounds, personalities, experiences, hopes and fears.
Whether you are thinking of having a church or registry office wedding, St James offers you a Marriage Preparation Course designed for couples who want to build a strong and lasting relationship.
The course gives you an opportunity to think through and discuss certain aspects of your relationship as a couple that may require clarification.
The course material is on DVD which you can watch in your own home. While based on Christian principles, it is relevant and helpful for any couple with or without a Christian faith or church background.
Topics covered include:
Communication - Commitment - Resolving conflict
Keeping love alive - Shared values
Two weeks prior to starting the course you will be asked to complete an on-line questionnaire called the Couple Survey. The questionnaire will help you recognise issues for discussion when meeting with the Support Couple (further details on page two).
St James Marriage Preparation Course: Cost £30. This is what you will receive – ‘The Marriage Book’ (by Nicky and Sila Lee); The Online Marriage Preparation questionnaire x 2; The Marriage Preparation Guest Manual x 2, two meetings with a trained couple from St James Church, and the loan of the ‘Marriage Preparation Course’ DVD’s.

Marriage Preparation Online Questionnaire
The Questionnaire is a comprehensive, user-friendly tool for use by people who are helping couples prepare for marriage, and who have been trained as Facilitators. The Questionnaire is designed to help engaged couples and couples considering marriage appreciate their unique relationship, learn more about themselves, and discuss topics important to their lifelong marriage
How the Questionnaire Works:
- Couples will be put in touch with a St James Marriage Preparation Support Couple (Facilitator). The Questionnaire will be made available to the couple online.
- Couples are encouraged to fill in the Questionnaire independently answering each statement with either agree or disagree or not certain. The statements relate to many aspects of married life such as Communication, Problem-solving, Religion, Dual-careers, Cohabitation, Parenting, Sex, Finance and many more.
- Evaluation of the Questionnaire is done online and will be made available to your Support Couple only who will treat it with strict confidentially.
- The completed Questionnaire provides the Support Couple with personalised information on topics and issues which require discussion or clarification, affirmation or problem solving by the couple. A face to face meeting with the support Couple offers the ideal opportunity for such a discussion.
