Pastoral Care

Life can be tough. We will all in some way or another face suffering or difficult situations.

We believe that no one should have to stand alone when facing difficult circumstances.

As a church we are here to engage with human life in all its fullness – deep joy and deep pain.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
John 13:34

Lifegroups

Lifegroups are the primary provider of pastoral care at Saint James. They are groups of 10-12 people who meet to do ‘life’ together. They are places where community can develop and people can work out what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. It is the chance for every member to be known and to know others, to share in all of life’s ups and downs. Lifegroups offer affirmation of one another as we negotiate the vagaries of daily life – work, play, relationships, death, illness and change.

Pastoral Care Team

This team builds on the existing support of Lifegroups by befriending and listening to those who may be struggling with difficult times or have particular needs. The Pastoral Care Team have been trained to use listening and counselling skills. They meet once a month to ensure that all who are known to be in need are receiving the best care from team members, other Saint James members and any relevant professionals. The team takes a responsible and sensitive approach to confidentiality. Every member on the team has been DBS checked and is safely recruited in line with the Oxford Diocese Safeguarding policy.

If you or anyone you know needs support please talk to a member of the Pastoral Care Team. Contact details are below. A member of the team or one of the Clergy will then be in touch and find out how best to offer support. For some just a phone call may be helpful. Visits are always by mutual agreement, in a convenient location. We can offer more in depth personal prayer, or by arrangement, home communion visits.

We also run courses and training events on different issues throughout the year, tailored around the specific need. These include Parenting Courses, Marriage Preparation, Bereavement Counselling and a Carers Support Group.
